Denver Attractions | Mount Evans
The rugged beauty of outdoor Denver Attractions is what draws many to Denver Hotels. During your next stay at Hotel Teatro, visit Mount Evans where you can enjoy skiing, hiking and other top Things to do in Denver.
About Mount Evans:
There are so many exciting Things to Do in Denver near Hotel Teatro – A Downtown Denver Hotel in the middle of it all – Denver Restaurants, Shopping in Denver, Denver Sporting Venues, and more. Sometimes, however, to enjoy the complete Denver experience, you have to get out of the city for just a bit and visit Denver Attractions that offer another side of Colorado.
While Downtown Denver is a hub for art, culture, fun social events, outside of the metro area you’ll find perhaps one of the best Denver Attractions of them all – Mount Evans. Mount Evans is a beautiful place to visit that both outdoor adventurers and typical Denver visitors enjoy. It offers the opportunity to enjoy open spaces with pristine air and stunning scenery, and it’s surprisingly close to our Denver Hotel.
Many of our Denver Hotel Guests ask us for recommendations for fun day trips to take, and we always encourage them to visit the Mount Evans Scenic Byway & Wilderness. While the top 5 miles of the infamous Mount Evans Road are closed during the wintertime to motor vehicles, you can hike or bike the road during most of the rest of the year and enjoy fabulous Things to Do in Denver at the top like playing on Summit Lake.
Why You Should Visit Mount Evans:
Some call Mount Evans the road to the sky. We call it one of the “must-see” Denver Attractions when you visit our city and an absolute joy to experience, even if just once. When you drive from 8,700 feet at Idaho Springs, and turn off Interstate 70 to 14,240 feet at the summit, you’ll pass through 3 life zones that include ancient trees, lakes and forests, and some of the most fantastic timberline you’ll likely ever witness. It’s not unusual for it to be 90 degrees in Denver and 40 degrees at the top of Mount Evans, which provides for a fun, different experience that is unlike Downtown Denver in so many ways. Wait until you see the mountain goats and bighorn sheep that are waiting to greet you as you climb to the top of the world!
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway sits just 60 miles west of Denver, making it one of the most perfect Things to Do in Denver if you want to escape it all for a while but still be back in Downtown Denver, at our Denver Hotel, in time for dinner at a fantastic Denver Restaurant. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in North America. A day trip to the top takes you on a journey that snakes and climbs through nearly 9,000 feet of elevation, through 5 climate zones, to one of 54 peaks in Colorado that soar to 14,000 feet and above – the famous “fourteeners.”
Tips for Visiting Mount Evans:
- Due to snow, the Mount Evans Byway is generally open to cars from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
- To arrive at Mount Evans, head west from Denver on I-70 for 32 miles to Exit 240 at the town of Idaho Springs. There is a National Forest information center here with maps and information hiking trains and road conditions.
- To visit Echo Lake on Mount Evans, continue south on State Highway 103 for 14 miles, slowly climbing in elevation with beautiful new vistas at each turn. Here, enjoy picnic tables and hiking trails at a pretty alpine lake that sits just a mere hour or so from our Denver Hotel.
- Summit Lake is a great stop on the way to the top of Mount Evans. It sits at 13,000 feet and is a Denver Mountain Park. Summit Lake is a good place to see bighorn sheep and mountain goats, which have many herds on the mountain. Make sure you wear sunscreen at this altitude, because there is 50 percent less protection from the sun’s rays. Also, some people find breathing at this altitude difficult, so keep this in mind.
